Why visit Torres del Paine National Park

Torres del Paine National Park is one of the world’s great wilderness destinations, where jagged granite peaks rise above turquoise lakes, vast glaciers and windswept Patagonian steppe. Even for well-travelled visitors, the scale of the landscapes can feel almost surreal. One moment you are watching condors circle overhead; the next, guanacos graze beside the road with the iconic towers of the Paine Massif looming in the distance.

While the famous W Trek draws hikers from across the globe, Torres del Paine offers far more than multi-day trekking alone. Horse riding with local gauchos, boat journeys towards Glacier Grey and wildlife-focused safaris, with the chance of puma sightings, reveal quieter corners of the park beyond the main trails. The region is also home to some of Chile’s most atmospheric places to stay, from luxury wilderness camps to traditional estancias immersed in extraordinary scenery.

What makes Torres del Paine so memorable, however, is the ever-changing nature of the landscape itself. Sunlight breaks through storm clouds in shifting patterns, lakes change from steel grey to vivid blue within minutes, and fierce Patagonian winds remind you just how wild this corner of South America remains.

Good to know

Getting there

Torres del Paine is around 1.5 to 2 hours north of Puerto Natales.

Some people do choose to stay in Puerto Bories (just ten minutes from Puerto Natales), especially during the summer, as the scenery is equally spectacular and it is much quieter, while the park is in easy reach for a day trip.

OUR FAVOURITE TIME TO VISIT

If you read almost any travel book it will tell you to go in December or January. The reality of this is that not only is the park incredibly busy at this time of year, but it is also when the wind is at its strongest. Gusts of up to 100mph are not uncommon, especially around the ice fields of Glacier Grey. Between us, we have regular debates as to whether spring or autumn is best. Spring sees the wildlife come to life after the long dark days of winter, while autumn is full of colour and the first snow on higher ground. Perhaps you’ll have to go twice to help settle the debate for us.
