Why visit Santiago de Chile

Santiago offers a compelling introduction to Chile, set in a broad valley beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Andes. The city combines historic quarters, contemporary neighbourhoods and a lively cultural scene, making it an engaging starting point for exploring the country.

In the historic centre, elegant squares and colonial buildings reflect Santiago’s early foundations. Landmarks such as Plaza de Armas and the Metropolitan Cathedral sit alongside museums that trace Chile’s complex political and cultural history. A short distance away, neighbourhoods such as Lastarria and Bellavista introduce a more modern rhythm, with galleries, cafés and small restaurants creating a vibrant urban atmosphere.

Santiago is also a city shaped by its geography. The Andes rise sharply to the east, visible from many parts of the city, while parks and green spaces provide welcome pauses within the busy streets. A cable car or funicular ride up Cerro San Cristóbal reveals sweeping views across the city towards the surrounding mountains.

Beyond the capital, Santiago’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring central Chile. Vineyards, the Pacific coast and the colourful port city of Valparaíso can all be reached within a short drive.

Foundation

Santiago was founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. Just months later, the settlement was largely destroyed during an uprising led by the Indigenous leader Michimalonco. The city was rebuilt almost entirely from scratch, shaping the early history of Chile’s capital.

Modernity

Santiago is now one of South America’s most modern cities. Over the past two decades, new neighbourhoods, contemporary architecture and an expanding cultural scene have transformed the capital, while ambitious urban projects have added parks, museums and pedestrian spaces across the city.
