Giving back

The sustainability approach at Nayara Hangaroa on Easter Island focuses on protecting the fragile ecosystem of Rapa Nui while supporting the local community and preserving cultural heritage.

  • Sustainable architecture: The hotel’s curved buildings and green roofs are inspired by traditional Rapa Nui design and the ceremonial village of Orongo. Natural materials such as volcanic stone, clay and local wood help the buildings blend into the island’s landscape.

  • Renewable energy: Solar panels and other renewable energy systems help generate electricity and reduce the resort’s environmental impact.

  • Water conservation: A wastewater treatment system allows greywater to be recycled for irrigation, helping protect the island’s limited freshwater resources.

  • Waste management: Recycling programmes and environmental initiatives, including coastal clean-ups, aim to minimise waste and protect the surrounding environment.

  • Local sourcing: Restaurants prioritise seasonal produce from local farmers and suppliers, supporting the island’s economy and reducing transport impact.

  • Community engagement: Many staff, guides and artisans come from the Rapa Nui community, and the hotel supports cultural preservation, education and local employment.
