How to visit Niagara

Instead of staying in Niagara and navigating the crowds, we recommend basing yourself in Toronto and embarking on a full day tour to see the iconic Niagara Falls from above in a helicopter. This allows you to enjoy the convenience and luxury of Toronto’s accommodations while still witnessing the full grandeur of the falls. From the air, you can see the Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls in one panoramic view, along with the Niagara River, gorge, and surrounding landscapes.

Beyond the Falls, Niagara is renowned for its vineyards. The Niagara wine region is Canada‘s largest and most concentrated wine-producing area, making it a top destination for wine lovers. After flying over the falls, its great to land at a winery for a tour, tasting and vineyard lunch or supper before heading back to your hotel in Toronto. There are also walking trails and farm-to-table restaurants that are worth visiting during your day in Niagara.

Highlights of Niagara

  • Flying over Niagara Falls: A helicopter flight over Niagara Falls provides a clear view the thundering water as it plunges over Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil Falls while avoiding the crowds on the ground.
  • Landing at a vineyard: Niagara is well known for its wine, and a visit to a vineyard is well worth your time. After flying over the falls, your helicopter can land at Jackson-Triggs, famous for its ice wines, or at Tirus, which also offers landing.
  • Other vineyards: Henry of Pelham is noted for its 90-point sparkling. Colaneri is picturesque. Two Sisters Vineyards offer exclusive experiences and a 96-point white. Konzelmann Estate Winery sits on the lake and produces aromatic Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
  • Restaurants: Pearl Morissette is a top-rated, two Michelin star restaurant with a winery, orchard, farm and bakery. Other highly rated farm-to-table favourites include AG Inspired Cuisine and Treadwell Cuisine.
  • Walking trails: The Niagara River Recreational Trail is an easy route with superb views from the Canadian side. The Niagara Glen and Niagara Gorge trails offer a moderate hike with views over the river and the whirlpool. The forest here is rich in wild flora and fauna. Trails can become busy in summer and at weekends.
Ever-Changing Falls

Niagara Falls moves back approximately 30 centimetres each year due to natural erosion, gradually reshaping the landscape over time. Over 12,000 years, they have moved back about seven miles.

Ice Wine

Niagara is one of the few regions in the world where ice wine is produced, this dessert wine is made from grapes that are naturally frozen on the vine, resulting in a rich, intensely sweet wine.

Getting to Niagara

If you are staying in Toronto, a driver will collect you from your hotel and drive closer to the falls, before you board a private helicopter that will fly you over the falls. Along the way, you can stop to lunch at a vineyard.

If you would rather get straight to the falls, a helicopter can be arranged to collect you from Toronto.
