Why visit Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is where wild nature takes the lead. Along its coast, you can spot orcas, humpbacks and sea lions, while forests shelter black bears and eagles. One moment you’re kayaking beside seals; the next, walking under towering cedars or watching whales offshore.

Each region offers a different connection to the landscape. Victoria blends harbour life and gardens with easy access to marine tours. Tofino shows the island’s wilder side, known for surfing, storm watching and bear-viewing by boat. In the Cowichan Valley and Comox, vineyards and farmland stretch beneath open skies where eagles soar.

Food reflects this natural rhythm, with chefs using fresh seafood, local produce and small-batch wines to create simple, seasonal dishes. Whether dining in a harbourside café or a remote lodge, every meal feels part of the island’s wild setting.

Highlights of Vancouver Island

  • Whale watching: From Victoria or Tofino, see orcas, humpbacks and grey whales, often with sea lions and porpoises. Private charters offer a quieter, more personal experience.

  • Pacific Rim National Park Reserve: Walk Long Beach, explore rainforest trails of ferns and giant cedars, or take a coastal ecology walk to learn about marine life.

  • Tofino: A small surf town with a wild edge, ideal for catching waves, kayaking in quiet inlets, or taking a private bear-watching cruise. Spot black bears along the shoreline and occasional coastal brown bears fishing for salmon. In winter, storms bring dramatic views.

  • Victoria: Stroll the Inner Harbour, visit the Royal BC Museum, or take a seaplane for views of the island and Gulf Islands. Whale watching trips often depart from the city’s waterfront, and its renowned gardens such as Butchart Gardens and Abkhazi Garden showcase vibrant blooms throughout the year.

  • Cowichan Valley: Discover vineyards and farms on a private wine or food tour. Between tastings, spot eagles and black bears, or explore local art studios.

  • Comox Valley: Hike alpine meadows on Mount Washington, kayak the coastline, or visit markets showcasing island-grown produce and seafood. Black bears are sometimes seen in wooded valleys or along quiet riverbanks.

Bears of Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is home to the largest population of black bears in British Columbia, and along the coast, you can sometimes spot rare coastal brown bears fishing for salmon.

Temperate Rainforest

Vancouver Island is famous for its temperate rainforests, especially in areas like the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park. These forests contain giant cedar and Douglas fir trees, some of which are indeed hundreds of years old, with a few approaching 800–1,000 years in age.
