Why visit Banff

Banff sits at the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Surrounding it, the town is framed by soaring peaks, turquoise lakes and pine-covered valleys. As a result, visitors come for the dramatic scenery, year-round outdoor activities and charming alpine atmosphere.

For example, glacier-fed lakes such as Lake Louise and Moraine Lake offer stunning views. Additionally, Banff National Park is full of opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting and photography. In winter, skiers and snowboarders flock to the slopes. Then, in summer, canoeing, mountain-biking and guided nature walks let you explore the wilderness.

Meanwhile, the town itself is welcoming, with boutique shops, local cafés and restaurants. Furthermore, there is a sense of community and adventure, whether you soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs, walk along riverside paths or watch elk and bears in their natural habitat.

Canada's Oldest National Park

Banff National Park was established in 1885. Today, it is Canada’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. The park began when railway workers discovered hot springs, sparking a movement to protect the area’s remarkable wilderness.

The Changing Colours of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake

The waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake change colour during the day and across the seasons. This happens because tiny particles of glacial silt, called rock flour, reflect sunlight and give the lakes their bright turquoise colour.

OUR FAVOURITE TIME TO VISIT

Summer, from June to September, brings warm days and clear skies. During this time, it is perfect for hiking, canoeing or exploring trails in Banff National Park. By contrast, spring and autumn are quieter. During these seasons, the air is crisp, the alpine meadows colourful, and wildlife spotting along rivers and lakes is ideal. Then, winter turns the Rockies into a snow-covered playground. At this time, skiing and snowboarding are popular, and the Banff Upper Hot Springs offer a relaxing way to end the day.
