Highlights

  • Historic wilderness lodge – Originally built in 1929 as a hunting and fishing retreat, this timber-framed lodge now feels like a relaxed, contemporary wilderness base, with crackling fires, big sofas, a convivial bar and lawns where deer and bears may wander past.

  • Spectacular riverside setting – Set on 60 acres beside the Atnarko and Bella Coola rivers, in the heart of the valley, the lodge is ringed by steep Coast Mountains and old-growth forest, giving an extraordinary sense of drama, scale, wilderness and seclusion.

  • World-class bear viewing – During the late-summer salmon run, so head to private riverside viewing platforms or drift silently along the Atnarko River by non-motorised raft, watching grizzlies and black bears fish and forage at close quarters, with expert guides managing distance and safety.

  • Adventure for all energy levels – Beyond bear season, days can fill with heli-hiking to high granite ridges, guided nature walks, e-mountain biking, river rafting, fishing, archery and via ferrata, so families or groups can match each outing to the keenest, fittest or most relaxed member.

  • Rich Indigenous culture – Stays can weave in time with Nuxalk Nation knowledge-keepers, visiting ancient petroglyph sites, galleries and village locations, hearing stories that bring the valley’s history to life and underlining that this is living Indigenous territory rather than an untouched wilderness playground.

  • Chalets, spa and hot tub – After a day on the river or hiking in the mountains, you can soak in the outdoor hot tub, warm up in the cedar sauna, then wander back to timber chalets with ensuite bathrooms, decks and meadow and mountain views.

A brief history of Tweedsmuir

Tweedsmuir Park Lodge has a rich and storied past, deeply entwined with British Columbia’s wilderness heritage. Originally built in the 1920s as a hunting and fishing lodge, it attracted early adventurers seeking remote, untamed landscapes. Its name pays homage to John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir and former Governor General of Canada, who was instrumental in the creation of nearby Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in 1938 – now one of the largest parks in the province. Over the decades, the lodge evolved from a rustic outpost into a celebrated base for low-impact wildlife experiences, particularly bear viewing. Today, it stands as a model of conservation-led tourism, offering access to the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Carefully restored, the lodge retains its original log structure and timeless charm while embracing modern sustainability values. It remains family-owned and committed to preserving the cultural and natural legacy of this extraordinary region.

Why we love Tweedsmuir Lodge

The lodge has an incredible sense of place; it just belongs here. With its collection of hand-made log cabins tucked beneath the mountains, with views across open lawns to a wildlife-rich meadow, it’s truly idyllic.
