Highlights

  • Owner-hosted Cariboo hideaway – Family-run and wonderfully personal, this intimate ranch-style lodge welcomes only a handful of guests at a time, so stays feel more like being invited to a much-loved family property than checking into a conventional wilderness lodge.

  • Extraordinary horse riding – Sure-footed horses, small groups and tailored rides across open rangeland, through scented forest and along lakeshores mean even nervous riders soon relax, while experienced riders can enjoy longer, more adventurous days in the saddle with expert guides.

  • Lake life and soft adventure – From wild swimming and canoeing to paddleboarding and fishing, days revolve around the lake and surrounding trails, with plenty of time for picnics, hammock lazing and campfires so both energetic and slower-paced travellers feel completely at home.

  • Digital detox and dark skies – With minimal phone signal and no pressure to be constantly connected, Siwash encourages you to switch off, talk, read and simply be, before wrapping up in blankets for unforgettable stargazing under some of Canada’s clearest night skies.

  • Wildlife and wide-open space – Set amid vast tracts of Cariboo wilderness, the lodge offers frequent sightings of deer, birds of prey and other wildlife, plus that rare feeling of space and silence where you can walk or ride for hours without seeing another soul.

  • Farm-to-table, home-cooked food – Menus showcase seasonal, local ingredients, often from the ranch’s own garden, with relaxed, home-cooked meals shared around the table, picnic hampers for days out and thoughtful touches for children and fussy eaters without anything feeling fussy or formal.

Good to know

How do we get there?

Reach Siwash Lake Wilderness Ranch from Vancouver by private charter flight, landing at a nearby airstrip followed by a 90-minute scenic road transfer. Alternatively, drive via the Gold Rush Trail in around six to seven hours, passing through forests, ranchlands and historic towns along British Columbia’s interior.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome at Siwash Lake Wilderness Ranch.

The ranch is family-owned and well suited to adventurous, nature-loving families. Activities such as horse riding, bushcraft, kayaking and wildlife tracking can be tailored to suit younger guests. The flexible, private-guided format works particularly well for families, allowing each day to be shaped around different ages, interests and energy levels.

That said, the experience is best suited to children aged six and up, particularly those comfortable in outdoor settings.

Giving back

  • Stewardship is a guiding philosophy at Siwash Lake Wilderness Ranch, where care for the environment shapes every aspect of the experience. The lodge has been developed to grow with the land, not onto it, ensuring a respectful integration with the surrounding wilderness.

The ranch holds a Platinum certification for sustainability from Green Step Sustainable Tourism, one of the highest levels of recognition in Canada. It is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and has taken the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge to measure and continually improve its impact.

    Practical measures include:

    • A 12 kW solar array provides most of the lodge’s electricity, supported by a generator and wood-burning furnaces.

    • A comprehensive waste management system ensures minimal landfill waste, with eco-septic systems filtering grey water for safe irrigation.

    • Ingredients are sourced from the lodge’s own organic garden and free-range livestock, reducing the supply chain’s environmental footprint.

    • Ongoing reforestation efforts have seen tens of thousands of seedlings planted, supporting habitat restoration and climate resilience.

This is sustainability in action, woven into every detail of the experience, without compromising comfort or quality.

A brief history of Siwash

Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort began life in the mid-1990s, when fourth-generation rancher Allyson Rogers and her family built a timber-framed lodge and small guest ranch from scratch on their remote Cariboo property. By 2001 it was welcoming guests as a boutique, owner-hosted ranch, blending riding with low-impact wilderness experiences and gradually evolving into one of Canada’s leading luxury ecolodges. In 2017 a massive wildfire swept through the region; Allyson and her team famously stayed to defend the ranch, saving the core buildings and much of the surrounding landscape. In the years since, Siwash has become a powerful symbol of regeneration, with fireweed, young forest and returning wildlife shaping its story. Today it operates largely off-grid, powered in large part by solar, with strong conservation principles at its heart, while still feeling every inch a warm, family-run wilderness home.
