Highlights

  • Architectural design: A bold, contemporary structure set on stilts above the rocky shoreline, deliberately oriented to engage with the elements, light and vast Atlantic horizons rather than sheltering from them.

  • Deep sense of place: Experiences are rooted in Fogo Island’s fishing heritage and island traditions, from storytelling and local guides to workshops with resident craftspeople and artists.

  • Rooms with uninterrupted views: Every room features floor-to-ceiling windows framing sea, sky and weather patterns, creating a strong connection to the shifting landscape throughout the day and seasons.

  • Community-led model: Operates as a social enterprise, with profits reinvested into the local economy, supporting employment, cultural preservation and long-term sustainability.

  • Seasonal, local dining: Menus are guided by what the island and surrounding waters provide, using preservation techniques such as curing, fermenting and foraging.

  • Atmosphere of stillness: The hotel’s remote setting encourages a slower pace, with time shaped by light, weather and the rhythms of island life rather than schedules.

Good to know

How do we get there?

The nearest major city is St. John’s. From St. John’s, travel by road for around 4.5 hours to Farewell on Newfoundland’s northeast coast. From here, a 45-minute ferry crossing takes you to Fogo Island. On arrival, it’s a short drive to the hotel, with transfers typically arranged in advance.

While the journey is scenic and deliberately unhurried, forming part of the overall experience, there is an option to take a 60-90min helicopter flight if you prefer.

Are children welcome?

Yes — children are welcome at Fogo Island Hotel, and the property is family-friendly.

The hotel accommodates guests of all ages, with room configurations and experiences suited to families as well as couples. The sense of spaciousness, connection to nature and relaxed island pace makes it a good option for multi-generational travel, and the team can help arrange activities that are appropriate for younger guests.

Giving back

Fogo Island Hotel takes sustainability seriously, with an approach that’s deeply woven into its operations, community engagement and design philosophy:

  • Community-centred model: The hotel is part of the Fogo Island Arts Corporation and the Fogo Island Inn Corporation, both structured as social enterprises. Profits are intentionally reinvested into the local community to support employment, cultural preservation, infrastructure and educational initiatives, ensuring long-term economic resilience for island residents.

  • Cultural and ecological stewardship: Sustainability here isn’t just environmental; it’s about safeguarding the island’s culture, history and ways of life. The hotel collaborates with local artists, craftspeople and knowledge-keepers to maintain traditions and ensure authenticity in experiences offered to guests.

  • Design with place in mind: The architecture is crafted to minimise environmental impact and work with the island’s harsh climate. Local materials and techniques inspired by traditional Newfoundland building practices help reduce resource use and foster resilience in the face of severe weather.

  • Supporting local supply chains: Dining and programming prioritise locally sourced ingredients, fish and produce wherever possible, reducing transport emissions and strengthening connections with regional producers.

Overall, its sustainability ethos blends economic, social and ecological goals, preserving both landscape and community while offering a respectful and regenerative travel experience.

How to spend your time here

  • Settle into the landscape: Spend time simply watching the light, weather and ocean from your room or shared spaces, letting the island set the pace.

  • Guided island experiences: Join walks with local guides, exploring fishing stages, coastal paths and small outport communities, with stories woven into the journey.

  • Art and culture: Visit artist studios and community workshops supported by the hotel, offering insight into contemporary creativity shaped by island life.

  • Seasonal dining: Allow evenings to unfold around long, unhurried meals centred on North Atlantic ingredients and local preservation traditions.

  • Wellness and stillness: Book a sauna session, practise yoga overlooking the sea or enjoy quiet moments designed for reflection rather than schedules.

  • Coastal exploration: Explore rugged shorelines, spot seabirds or whales in season, and experience the raw beauty that defines Fogo Island.
