cazenove+loyd was founded on working with the best guides in the business to bring destinations to life, and the quality and range of guides is what makes expedition cruising truly special. Recent years have seen the development of luxury vessels allowing you to blend your adventure with indulgence whether you sail on an expedition ship or a private charter to any remote corner of the world.

This is your invitation to explore some of the planet’s most exclusive and untouched regions, while enjoying the comfort and sophistication of a luxury ship.

Unlike traditional cruises, expedition voyages prioritise immersive experiences with specialist guides, allowing you to delve deeper into the natural world, witness breathtaking landscapes and encounter diverse wildlife, from the icy realms of Antarctica to the vibrant ecosystems of the Galapagos islands.

In this guide, we’ll navigate through some of the world’s best expedition cruises, each promising an unforgettable adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or new to the world of expedition cruising, these voyages offer a gateway to the extraordinary.  With multiple options and styles, our knowledgeable team can match you with the boat and guides that will suit you best.

Antarctica: Journey to the seventh continent

The greatest wilderness on earth, Antarctica offers a unique expedition cruise experience. With awe-inspiring glaciers and a world of wildlife, an expedition to the seventh continent allows you to reach one of the most remote places on the planet.

As you navigate through icy waters and land at fantastically out-of-the-way sites, you’ll have the chance to explore pristine landscapes, see wildlife such as penguins, seals and whales, and participate in guided shore excursions and zodiac cruises which are small boats designed for exploring and getting you to areas that larger boats can’t. These trips often include visits to historic sites, such as former whaling stations and research outposts, providing a deeper insight into Antarctica’s past.

The Greg Mortimer offers several trips to the Antarctic Peninsula, whilst the SH Vega  offers a 11-19 day exploration of the region’s landscapes and trips on the Magellan Explorer include a flight over the Drake Passage saving time (and a potentially bumpy sea crossing). Sailing from New Zealand, the Heritage Adventurer is one of very few ships with a permit to visit Scott’s Hut, from where he set off on the fateful mission to reach the South Pole.

With sophisticated accommodation, gourmet dining and full amenities, an expedition cruise to Antarctica promises a comfortable and enriching adventure to one of the world’s most remote and breathtaking destinations.

Svalbard: In the realm of the polar bear

A remote Arctic archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is a land of dramatic contrasts. This icy wilderness offers an expedition cruise experience, where stunning fjords, towering glaciers and incredible wildlife encounters await.

Known as the realm of the polar bear, with a population of around 2,000 people and many more bears than humans, the chance of seeing these majestic creatures is very high. Of course, an expedition cruise to Svalbard isn’t just about the bears. Svalbard is an incredible destination to explore, with a huge range of wildlife including colonies of guillemots, arctic foxes, reindeer and whales.

The scenery in Svalbard is awe-inspiring and diverse – you’ll cruise past enormous ice sheets such as the iconic Monaco Glacier, sail through breathtaking fjords such as Kongsfjorden and explore the Arctic tundra, where colourful mosses and wildflowers bloom during the region’s short summer.

Expedition cruises to Svalbard are also packed with excitement and adventure. Spot polar bears hunting on the ice, get up close to wildlife with zodiac excursions, trek through Arctic landscapes to discover historical sites and paddle through icy waters for an experience in the untouched environment.

Greenland and the Northwest Passage

There’s something about this part of the world that stirs up images of lost realms, of mystical beings and a history that is known to so few people. Much of that mysticism stems from the lost ships of Sir John Franklin who went in search of the Northwest Passage in 1845 and was never seen again. The fate of him and his men is only just coming to light after the discovery of his ships, the Erebus and Terror in 2014 and 2016.

Exploring these regions by land is technically possible, however, with no roads and minimal infrastructure it is certainly a challenge, That makes the prospect of travelling by luxury expedition vessel all the more appealing.

The ice of Northwest Passage dictates every aspect of life and throughout August and September it retreats enough to allow passage for ships and wildlife. Sailing through this region is a true expedition in that a slight change of wind or drift of ice can change plans in an instant. While a full transit of the passage can take up to 30 days, there are more condensed voyages that explore the eastern routes. It is here that you will discover known Franklin sites, visit Innuit communities and marvel and lands carved by ice and seen by so few people. Wildlife sightings from polar bears to walrus and seabirds to the elusive narwhal are possible at any point on these voyages.

Greenland is often the start of end point of many of these Northwest Passage itineraries, yet is it so much more than somewhere to board your ship. This is a land that feels like it was built by giants, where everything is on a different scale from the largest fjords in the world to the massive ice cap. With itineraries dedicated to exploring the coastline you can focus on the Viking or nomadic history, remote trekking, the fascinating culture, wildlife, geology or a combination of all of them. For adventure seekers there are opportunities to kayak, dog sled, hike, climb, or ski. It is even possible to charter your own ship and heli-ski in places that almost no other human has ever seen. For a more relaxed adventure, the fishing opportunities are incredible too.

For many people, an expedition cruise to this part of the world is not a fist voyage, but once the bug of exploring by ship has bitten it soon rises to the top of the list.
