The Pekoe Trail is a hiking route through Sri Lanka’s iconic hill country spanning 300km and strategically divided into 22 stages. The route takes you through lush tea plantations, dense forests, rural villages and colonial estates connecting some of Sri Lanka’s iconic locations in the central highlands. While these hiking routes (stages) are not new and have been used by the locals for many years, it’s only recently the trail developers have essentially ‘connected the dots’ to form the Pekoe Trail.
Where to stay in Tea Country?
During my time in Tea Country, I stayed at Ceylon Tea Trails – a Relais and Chateaux property in the Ceylon tea region consisting of 5 authentic tea planters bungalows. I stayed in the Norwood bungalow, a short 45-minute drive from the start of stage 7. Side note – I was supposed to hike stage 8 which is closer but due to the recent rains, the trail became too slippery, and I switched last-minute to stage 7.
Why hike the Pekoe Trail with an expert?
It was an early start as being November, it’s common for the morning sun to make a quick shift with heavy rains being an occurrence in the afternoon. I met my guide, SK, at the start of the trail and was immediately drawn to his bubbly personality and boundless energy. While the trail can be done independently with the help of the Pekoe Trail app, I would highly recommend a guide for the adventure to truly immerse in the experience and understand the different regions and history of the plantations (I also wouldn’t have known about the current weather conditions causing difficulties in stage 8). Loaded with a water bottle and kitted out with my leech socks (yes leech socks!) I was ready to begin.
Hiking The Pekoe Trail
As we began stage 7, SK brought the trail to life with captivating stories about the region’s rich history. In the distance, he pointed out the iconic Adam’s Peak in the skyline. Our journey wound through picturesque tea plantations, where we exchanged waves with tea pickers, paused at the working tea factories, and passed through rural villages. Along the way, we crossed the Kandy to Ella train tracks – a quintessentially Sri Lankan moment. As we approached Hatton, the largest town in the Nuwara Eliya District, we stopped at a stunning vantage point to take in the views.
A delightful surprise awaited: SK treated me to a tea and kokis break, a thoughtful and authentic touch to the experience. Energised, we continued, reaching the end of stage 7 after an unforgettable four-and-a-half-hour trek.
