When I first decided to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had seen countless documentaries and read glowing accounts of others’ experiences, but I still had lingering doubts. Would it live up to the hype? Could a few hours in the forest justify the steep price tag? And most of all, what would it really feel like to come face-to-face with one of the world’s most majestic and endangered creatures? Let me take you through my journey—starting with my expectations and ending with the mind-blowing reality.
Expectation: A Gruelling Hike into Dense Jungle Before my trip, I imagined the trek would be physically exhausting. I pictured myself hacking through dense vegetation with a machete, wiping sweat from my brow, all while avoiding thick roots and the occasional snake. The thought of climbing up the steep slopes of the Virunga Mountains filled me with equal parts dread and excitement. I prepared for the worst: hiking boots, gloves, gaiters, and even a mental pep talk to endure hours of discomfort.
Reality: While the hike was challenging in parts, it was far from the endurance test I had envisioned. Each trek is carefully organised based on your fitness level, and the guides are incredibly accommodating, offering frequent stops and even porters to assist with your backpack. The trail itself was lush but well-trodden, and the stunning forest scenery—giant trees, misty views, and exotic birdsong—made the journey as much of a highlight as the destination. It felt like stepping into an enchanted world.
Expectation: A Brief Glimpse of the Gorillas I had read that gorilla visits are strictly limited to one hour, and I worried that the time might feel too short. Would I spend the first 30 minutes fumbling with my camera or staring nervously at these huge creatures from a distance? I half-expected the gorillas to be elusive, hidden behind thick foliage, or uninterested in human visitors.
Reality: That one hour felt like an eternity—in the best way possible. When our guides signalled that we were close to the gorilla family, my heart started pounding. Then, there they were. A silverback as massive as a small car lounged regally in a patch of sunlight. Around him, playful juveniles tumbled over each other while a mother gently cradled her baby. The guides ensured we maintained a respectful distance, but the gorillas didn’t seem to care about our presence. At one point, a curious juvenile came so close that I could see the shine in its eyes and could hear the crunch of leaves as it ate. The connection felt primal, almost spiritual.
Expectation: The Experience Would Be “Touristy” Given how popular gorilla trekking has become, I worried that the experience might feel overly commercialised, with large crowds and a rushed atmosphere. Would it feel like a zoo, with people jockeying for the best photo opportunities?
Reality: Rwanda has done an incredible job of preserving the authenticity of gorilla trekking. Trekking groups are limited to just eight people, and the guides are strict about minimizing the impact on the gorillas’ natural behaviour. The experience felt intimate and personal, more like being invited into the gorillas’ home than a typical tourist activity. There was no jostling for photos or intrusive behaviour; everyone in my group was awestruck and respectful. The sense of exclusivity and reverence was palpable.
Expectation: An Expensive Luxury That’s Hard to Justify Let’s face it: gorilla trekking in Rwanda isn’t cheap. Between the permits, accommodation, and travel, it’s a serious investment. I questioned whether an hour with the gorillas would truly be worth the cost, especially when compared to other wildlife experiences.
Reality: Worth. Every. Penny. It’s hard to put a price on the sheer wonder of locking eyes with a silverback or hearing the gentle sounds of a gorilla family going about their day. Beyond the emotional impact, the cost of the permits goes directly toward gorilla conservation efforts and supporting local communities. Knowing that my visit contributed to protecting these incredible creatures and their habitat made the experience even more meaningful.
The Breath-Taking Reality of Gorilla Trekking Nothing could have prepared me for the overwhelming beauty of the encounter. It wasn’t just seeing the gorillas—it was the profound sense of connection I felt with them. Their eyes held a depth of emotion that reminded me just how closely we’re related. Watching their familial interactions, from playful scuffles to tender moments of grooming, was a humbling reminder of how complex and intelligent they are.
The environment added to the magic. The mist-shrouded forests of Volcanoes National Park are straight out of a dream, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy and the calls of distant birds echoing in the background. It was more than a wildlife encounter; it was a communion with nature at its purest.
Final Thoughts Gorilla trekking in Rwanda shattered every expectation I had. It wasn’t just a bucket-list activity; it was a transformative experience. The physical effort, the conservation efforts behind it, and the raw, breathtaking beauty of the encounter made it one of the most profound adventures of my life. If you’ve ever considered it, let this be your sign: go. It’s not just a trip—it’s a memory that will stay with you forever.
