Thanks to the special friendships we have built up over the years, we have unprecedented access to truly inspiring people and places, exclusive entry to private properties and extraordinary experiences that money alone can’t buy. One of these connections in Southeast Asia is Phuc Nguyen, a Vietnamese travel veteran with more than 20 years of experience in the industry. We sat down with Phuc to learn more about what inspired him to work in travel and how he helps bring our trips to life on the ground.

What inspired you to start working in tourism?

From a young age, I have always been fascinated by the diverse cultures and customs of Vietnam’s neighbouring countries and other western nations. My passion for travel was innate, and I yearned for the opportunity to explore these countries and experience their unique differences firsthand. However, upon graduating from university, I did not immediately secure a position in a local tour operator. It was only after meeting my former boss, a seasoned veteran in the travel industry, that my career in tourism truly began.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my 20+ years in the travel business is witnessing the joy and happiness of clients when they travel with me, knowing that they have benefited from my well-suited advice. The satisfaction of clients often leads to them recommending our services to their friends or my overseas agents, which is truly gratifying.

What are your key considerations when helping to fulfil a trip or experience for our clients?

Firstly, I always consult with cazenove+loyd to gain a thorough understanding of their clients’ interests, any special events or occasions they are celebrating, and details about their travel companions, such as fiancé(e), spouse or children. By meticulously gathering and examining this information, I can help to craft personalised itineraries that not only meet but exceed the clients’ expectations, ensuring they have a truly memorable and enjoyable trip.

What are your top 3 must-see/must-do experiences/places in Vietnam?

These are undoubtedly Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An. These cities are steeped in rich cultural heritage and tradition, and their inhabitants are known for their warm hospitality. Moreover, these cities have served as former capitals of Vietnam or have been recognised as ancient towns or UNESCO World Heritage sites, further adding to their allure.

How has the country changed for tourists over the years – and how do you see travel in Vietnam evolving in the future?

The Vietnamese government has acknowledged the travel business and tourism as one of the nation’s key economic sectors. The tourism service sector alone has contributed more than 60% of the total 42% that the service sector has added to the country’s GDP. To further enhance Vietnam’s appeal to international travellers, the government must adopt a more proactive approach in implementing favourable immigration policies, streamlining processes, applying more lenient policies and issuing longer-stay visas for tourists from high-spending markets. Additionally, the government should invest in more effective marketing campaigns at international travel shows, markets, and on global social media platforms to promote Vietnam as a desirable destination, as many potential visitors remain unaware of the wealth of experiences the country has to offer. Furthermore, to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of Vietnam’s tourism industry, the government must enforce stricter environmental protection measures and prioritise maintaining ecological balance.
