Embarking on a journey through India is always a feast for the senses, but when done in partnership with Aman, the experience becomes something truly extraordinary. I recently had the privilege of exploring the vibrant and diverse landscapes of India with Aman, and I can honestly say it was a journey that exceeded all expectations. From the bustling streets of Delhi to the tranquil wilderness of Ranthambore, and finally, the luxurious oasis of Amanbagh, each stop was a world unto itself, steeped in history, culture, and understated luxury.

The Imperial Delhi – A Regal Beginning

Our adventure began in the heart of India’s capital, Delhi, where we spent two nights at The Imperial, an iconic hotel that transports you back in time. The hotel, a masterpiece of colonial architecture, boasts a rich history, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the Art Deco era. From the moment we stepped through its grand entrance, we were treated like royalty. The rooms, particularly the Art Deco suites, are beautifully designed, blending heritage with modern comforts. For those seeking a special touch, an upgrade to one of these suites is highly recommended. Staying at The Imperial was the perfect way to acclimatise to the new time zone and immerse ourselves in the history of this fascinating city.

From City to Wilderness: Delhi to Ranthambore

Leaving the urban sprawl of Delhi behind, as we quickly learned, Delhi is a city that never sleeps. Rising early to travel to the train station, we ventured out just after dawn as the city came alive. At 6 am, the streets were already bustling with activity, a whirlwind of people going about their daily lives. It was a brief but unforgettable glimpse into the pulse of Delhi, setting the stage for the next part of our journey. We boarded a train bound for Ranthambore. The train ride, which takes roughly five hours, was an experience in itself. We travelled in a private, air-conditioned cabin with four sleeper beds—modest but incredibly comfortable, offering an ideal space to nap as the picturesque countryside of Rajasthan unfolded outside our windows.

Our Aman “Batman” was on hand throughout the journey. This is no ordinary assistant but a hallmark of Aman’s exceptional service. The term “batman” originates from the British military, where a batman was an officer’s personal attendant, ensuring they had everything they needed. Our batman provided a delightful breakfast box and kept us hydrated with a selection of drinks, ensuring we were well looked after until we reached our next destination.

Upon arrival, we were whisked away in a sleek 4×4, driving through the rugged beauty of Rajasthan towards our camp, Aman-i-Khas.

Aman-i-Khas – Where Luxury Meets the Wild

Nestled on the edge of Ranthambore National Park, Aman-i-Khas is a luxurious camp that combines opulence with a deep connection to nature. The property spans 18 acres, yet with only 11 tents, it offers an unparalleled sense of space and privacy. Each tent is a marvel of design, blending the feel of a traditional Mughal hunting camp with modern amenities, ensuring every comfort is catered for. From king-sized beds to beautiful stone bathtubs that could fit a baby elephant! These tents are equipped with everything you could possibly need.

What makes Aman-i-Khas so special is its ability to immerse you in nature without sacrificing luxury. The camp is eco-conscious, powered largely by solar panels, and the grounds are home to lush greenery and gardens. The dining experience here is sublime, with freshly prepared, locally sourced meals that celebrate the rich flavours of Rajasthan.

A highlight of our stay was birdwatching by the camp’s crocodile pond, where bird books and binoculars awaited our use, a thoughtful touch that encapsulates Aman’s attention to detail. We also had the opportunity to take private guided tours of Ranthambore in Aman’s specially designed Gypsy Jeeps. Ranthambore is, of course, renowned for its tigers, and Aman can arrange private tiger safaris with one of the park’s most experienced rangers, Daulat Singh. Meeting Daulat was an extraordinary experience. Having survived a near-fatal tiger attack, which left him blind and requiring extensive reconstruction surgery, his deep love and respect for these magnificent animals are truly inspiring. His stories added an incredible layer of depth to our search for tigers, reminding us of the delicate balance between man and nature.

Amanbagh – A Hidden Oasis in the Hills

After two days of exhilarating wildlife encounters, we journeyed through the Rajasthani countryside to our next destination: Amanbagh. If Aman-i-Khas felt like an adventure camp, Amanbagh was its serene counterpart—a sanctuary of calm amidst the Aravalli Hills.

This palatial retreat, set within a former maharaja’s hunting ground, is nothing short of breathtaking. The property boasts stunning architecture with Mughal influences, and the lush gardens, spa, and grand pool pavilion rooms provide a tranquil space to recharge. One of the unexpected joys was watching the monkeys play in the private gardens outside our room—a delightful bit of entertainment during an otherwise peaceful stay.

Amanbagh is the perfect place to switch off completely. For those who seek pure relaxation, the spa offers exceptional treatments, and the pool provides a cool, quiet retreat. However, for those who, like me, get a little restless, there are plenty of activities to choose from. Whether it’s exploring local ruins, visiting nearby villages, or engaging in more unique experiences—such as camel polo or horse riding—there is something for everyone. The Ayurvedic doctor consultation was also a highlight, providing a fascinating insight into traditional Indian medicine.

The Perfect Escape for All

In many ways, this journey with Aman felt like a dream—a seamless blend of adventure, luxury, and culture. What makes it truly special, though, is its versatility. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast eager to explore Ranthambore’s tiger reserves, a culture lover seeking out India’s rich history, or simply in need of a luxurious escape where you can unwind by the pool, this trip caters to all.

For me, Aman’s ability to weave together these diverse experiences, while maintaining the highest level of comfort and service, is what sets them apart. From the wild beauty of Ranthambore to the tranquil haven of Amanbagh, this was a journey that I will cherish for years to come.
