A Journey into Aboriginal Arnhem Land in Australia's Top End

 I spent two nights in Arnhem Land with Davidson’s Arnhem Land Safaris and it’s honestly a place anyone with an interest in art, history and culture needs to experience at least once. Arnhem Land is famous for its Aboriginal rock art, and it absolutely lived up to expectations. 

There are lots of areas across Australia’s Northern Territory where you can see rock art, but many are much smaller, fenced off and viewed from a distance. Arnhem Land feels completely different. The art is everywhere, on huge rock faces, inside caves and tucked away throughout the landscape. Because access to the region is so limited, it all feels incredibly untouched and, with your guide, you can get properly close to it all. 

Before I get much further, it is worth managing expectations slightly. Davidson’s isn’t luxury in the traditional sense and it’s not trying to be. The luxury here is the experience itself and the quality of the guides, which is where they truly stand out. Accommodation is in simple cabins which are clean and comfortable, with a communal dining area, lounge space and a pool. Service is very laid-back Aussie style rather than polished, but this fits the whole experience perfectly. 

The food is fresh, wholesome and really good. Nothing fancy, but it wouldn’t feel right if it was. You can expect tasty breakfasts, lunches and dinners that are perfect after long days out exploring. Air conditioning and Wi-Fi are left behind here, fans are provided and personally, I found them completely fine. Wi-Fi access is basically non-existent, so be prepared to properly switch off for a few days and just immerse yourself in nature. Also, this is the Northern Territory, so bugs are very much part of the experience too – definitely pack mosquito spray!  

One of the things that makes Davidson’s special is the history behind the lodge itself. It’s a place that feels deeply connected to the land and its stories, and you can tell there’s genuine respect for both the history and the community here without anything feeling overly staged or commercial. 

For me though, the real standout at Davidson’s was the guides (alongside the rock art itself, of course). Davidson’s only works with Australian guides who genuinely know the bush inside out, and it completely changes the experience. The majority of their guides come back year after year, which can be rare for seasonal work in Australia and says a lot about how passionate they are about what they do. 

My guide was Cameron and, in my opinion, an Australian legend. He seemed to know everything (birds, plants, wildlife, history, rock art) and every walk felt interesting without it ever sounding scripted. More importantly, he was just a genuinely lovely guy to spend time with. 

Every stay here is slightly different and tailored around weather, mobility and interests, but to give you an idea of my experience, we arrived around lunchtime after travelling in by charter flight from Darwin. You can also drive, but it’s around six hours and earlier in the season the roads are usually still closed after the wet season, so flying is often the only option. 

After a light lunch and a bit of time to settle in, we headed out to see the famous Rainbow Serpent rock art site, one of the biggest and best-preserved pieces in the region. Arnhem Land has so much rock art that experiences can easily be adapted depending on how active you want to be, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. 

The walk itself was beautiful, and Cameron stopped constantly along the way to share stories about the land, Aboriginal history and the history of Davidson’s itself. It really helped give context to everything we’d be seeing over the next few days. After a short hike, we entered a cave and came face-to-face with the Rainbow Serpent artwork in all its glory. Seeing something so ancient, still preserved in the middle of this remote landscape, really drums home the aboriginal history of Australia. 

The next day, we ventured further into Arnhem Land, discovering more Rock Art and soaking in the warm Australian sun as we hiked to the caves, which are Aboriginal burial sites, still completely preserved and untouched. One of the most fascinating things about Arnhem Land is how protected everything remains. The burial remains haven’t even been aged because of their sacred nature, so nobody actually knows exactly how old they are. No photos are allowed inside, which honestly makes the experience feel even more special and respectful. Cameron explained the burial traditions and history in such a thoughtful way that you really start to appreciate just how important and protected these places are. 

After leaving the cave, Cameron told us we were heading to our “reward” and he definitely wasn’t wrong. A short walk brought us out to the most incredible lookout across Arnhem Land. We spent a while just sitting quietly, taking in the landscape and thinking about how many thousands of years people had stood in that exact same spot looking out over the same, ancient view. 

A boat safari back through the waterways brought us back in time for lunch and a bit of downtime during the hottest part of the day before heading out again for a sunset cruise. 

Of course, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but Cameron knew a particular spot where one crocodile apparently liked to hunt and, somehow, we got lucky. As the sun started setting, we sat on the boat with sparkling wine, cheese and crackers while this huge croc waited patiently in the water beside a sandbank, hoping an unsuspecting bird might wander too close. It felt very Australian in the best possible way. 

The next morning was departure day. We had stayed two nights, but three would have been ideal. Before leaving, we visited a small creek blocked by a waterfall, meaning crocodiles can’t get through. It’s one of the very few places in the area where it’s safe to swim. Floating in the warm water surrounded by Arnhem Land’s incredible scenery felt like the perfect way to finish the trip.
