Paro International Airport (PBH) is Bhutan’s only international airport. From there, guests travel by road to Punakha, typically via Thimphu. The drive from Paro to Thimphu takes around one to one and a half hours, passing through the Paro Valley and into the capital.
From Thimphu, the journey continues to Punakha, taking approximately two and a half to three hours. The route crosses the Dochula Pass at around 3,100 metres, where 108 chortens stand against sweeping Himalayan views on clear days. From the pass, the road descends into the warmer Punakha Valley. Dhensa Boutique Resort is then a short drive within the valley, set above the river and surrounding forest. The total journey from Paro to the resort is around four to five hours by road, depending on conditions and stops.
Children of all ages are welcome at Dhensa Boutique Resort.
Dhensa Boutique Resort highlights the culture, traditions and landscapes of the Punakha Valley through a range of locally inspired experiences. Guests can take part in activities such as rice threshing, prayer-flag hoisting, river rafting and visits to nearby temples and monasteries, providing an insight into Bhutanese life and heritage.
The resort’s restaurant serves home-style Bhutanese cuisine alongside Asian and Western dishes, with menus created using local and organic produce.
Set among pine forests overlooking the Punakha River and terraced rice fields, Dhensa encourages guests to experience and appreciate the natural beauty of one of Bhutan’s most picturesque valleys.
Dhensa Boutique Resort is within walking distance of Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery, a hilltop temple overlooking the Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang valleys. The site is known for its sweeping views and large bronze statue of Chenrezig.
Guests can try traditional Bhutanese khuru, one of the country’s national sports, where players throw darts at a small wooden target set at distance.
The Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers flow through the Punakha Valley and originate in the glacial regions of the northern Himalayas. They offer opportunities for white-water rafting, depending on conditions.
Depending on the season, guests may also experience rice threshing in the surrounding fields, offering an insight into traditional agricultural life in the Punakha Valley, often referred to as Bhutan’s rice bowl.
Punakha Dzong, known as the ‘Palace of Happiness’, is one of Bhutan’s most important monasteries. It sits at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Fertility Temple, can be reached on a 30-minute walk through rice fields. It is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, a revered figure in Bhutanese history.
One of the things we love most about Dhensa Boutique Resort is the incredible setting, tucked among pine trees on a hillside above the valley, creating a sense of seclusion while remaining close to Punakha’s cultural highlights.
