Good to know

How to get there

The lodge is approximately a 2 hour 30 minute drive from Belize City or two hours from San Ignacio, along a mix of paved and unpaved roads. Private 4×4 transfers are recommended, which can be arranged through the property. Helicopter transfers are also available from Belize City for those seeking a more direct and scenic arrival.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome at Gaïa Riverlodge. However, due to its remote setting and natural landscape—including steep paths and proximity to the waterfalls—it is best suited to older children. Families can be accommodated in the larger cabanas, and tailored excursions are available.

Giving back

Gaïa Riverlodge is deeply committed to sustainability and responsible tourism. The lodge operates on renewable energy from a nearby hydroelectric plant and prioritises water conservation and waste reduction. Through its sister property, Matachica, the team supports local education initiatives in nearby communities. The use of local craftsmanship in the lodge’s design also supports Belizean artisans and promotes cultural heritage.

What is nearby?

The lodge is surrounded by the untamed beauty of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, placing guests within easy reach of Belize’s most captivating inland experiences. Its own Five Sisters Waterfalls are just a short walk away, with riverside decks and natural swimming holes perfect for a morning dip.

Venture deeper into the reserve to explore the vast Maya ruins of Caracol or canoe through the mysterious Barton Creek Cave. The Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools are also nearby, offering dramatic rock formations and cooling waters ideal after a jungle hike. For something more active, a guided horse ride through the forest offers a memorable way to reach remote viewpoints, while zip-lining through the canopy provides a thrilling perspective on the landscape.

Bird enthusiasts will find the area particularly rewarding, with opportunities to spot species such as the keel-billed toucan and acorn woodpecker. Additionally, the lodge offers unique experiences such as nocturnal rainforest walks, providing insights into the vibrant ecosystem after dark.

Activities can be booked with us in advance or upon arrival. To secure the best possible guide for your experience we recommend booking these in advance.

Why we love Gaia Riverlodge

It’s the sound of the waterfalls that stays with you. Waking up to rushing water below your cabana and spending the afternoon in one of the natural pools makes this a truly immersive rainforest retreat — completely unplugged, and all the better for it.
