Hosts Richard and Charlie live on-site at Tekanda Lodge, bringing their lifelong ambition to fruition. Since meeting at university, they had dreamt of owning and running a luxury lodge in the tropics—a dream that became a reality after raising their four children. In 2016, they acquired an abandoned tea estate and crafted it into what Tekanda Lodge is today. Nestled atop a hill, the lodge was built from the ground up and completed in 2021. Originally designed for exclusive use, 2024 saw its first season as a private lodge welcoming guests around the globe.

Accommodation

Tekanda Lodge consists of 4 lodge rooms, 2 cabanas, and expansive grounds spanning over 10 acres. Designed like a villa but with the infrastructure of a hotel, the architecture is quintessentially Sri Lankan. Each lodge room features a private veranda, while the cabanas offer a bit more privacy, with views stretching across stunning paddy fields toward the jungle hills in the north.

The infinity pool seamlessly blends into the nature, surrounded by beautiful plants and trees that attract butterflies, birds, and an array of wildlife. Thoughtful touches, such as bird books in the main room and cabanas, encourage guests to learn about the colourful species fluttering by.

Experiences

Located within easy reach of Tekanda Lodge are the historic town of Galle and the southern coastal gem of Weligama. Even closer, you’ll find beaches, the Koggala Lake, lush paddy fields, and tranquil rural villages untouched by the typical tourist routes. While there’s plenty to explore nearby, Tekanda Lodge offers its own array of unique experiences that can only be enjoyed by staying on the estate.

Upon arrival, Richard and Charlie will guide you on a tour of the estate, offering a firsthand look at the production of tea, coconut, and cinnamon, all cultivated right on the property. The estate also boasts a tropical kitchen garden, where a variety of citrus fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices are grown using traditional organic methods.

One of the lodge’s standout experiences is a magical nighttime swim with fireflies. At 10 pm, the lights are switched off, and you’re invited to the main pool for a moonlit swim illuminated solely by the natural glow of fireflies.

A visit to Wilhena Tea Factory is a must for an experience, unlike any other tea tour in Sri Lanka. Due to the commercial relationship with the factory, guests staying at Tekanda Lodge have the unique opportunity to visit and coincide with the morning tea processing, offering the chance to witness the rolling, drying and sifting machines along with the accompanying aromas – while it may not be the most glamorous tea experience, it’s certainly the most real! 

The Tekanda Foundation

Tekanda lodge is more than just an incredible stay and in 2023, Richard and Charlie established the Tekanda Foundation which aims to empower the local community through education and sports. For guests interested in learning about the Tekanda Foundation’s impactful work, there’s an opportunity to visit and help out at the ‘Village Empowerment Centre’ which offers free educational courses to over 300 women and children from surrounding villages and has been named by the local community, ‘Gamata Athak’ which means “a hand to the village.” 

In January 2023, the Tekanda Foundation launched a girls’ cricket academy to give girls from rural communities the chance to play Sri Lanka’s beloved game, despite limited local school programs and the high cost of traveling to facilities in towns. The academy now has a full-time manager and two part-time coaches, providing coaching and playing opportunities to over 60 girls aged 8-15. With advance notice, guests with experience and an interest in coaching can participate.
