Stretching along Argentina’s little-visited Atlantic coastline, Patagonia Azul is one of South America’s newest and most exciting conservation destinations. Far removed from the glaciers and mountains of western Patagonia, this remarkable region is defined by rugged cliffs, secluded bays and turquoise waters teeming with marine life. It offers a completely different perspective on Patagonia, where the focus is on wildlife, coastal exploration and vast, windswept landscapes.
The region protects an extraordinary diversity of species, from southern right whales, dolphins and orcas to Magellanic penguins, sea lions and an astonishing variety of seabirds. Guided boat excursions reveal hidden islands and sheltered coves, while kayaking, hiking and snorkelling allow you to experience the coastline from a different perspective.
Patagonia Azul is also at the forefront of marine conservation, with carefully managed tourism helping to protect one of Argentina’s most important coastal ecosystems. Visitor numbers remain low, creating a genuine sense of discovery that is increasingly rare.
For travellers looking to venture beyond Patagonia’s classic highlights, Patagonia Azul combines spectacular wildlife, dramatic coastal scenery and meaningful conservation in a destination that still feels wonderfully wild and largely undiscovered.

Long before Patagonia Azul became a celebrated wildlife destination, its coastline was at the heart of the world’s largest seaweed harvesting operation. In the 1950s, more than 400 people lived and worked at Bahía Bustamante, collecting kelp that was shipped around the world for use in everything from cosmetics to pharmaceuticals. Today, the same coastline is leading a new chapter, with regenerative seaweed projects helping to restore marine ecosystems while supporting sustainable local livelihoods.
Patagonia’s Welsh heritage extends all the way to the Atlantic coast. In 1865, 153 Welsh settlers arrived aboard the sailing ship Mimosa, establishing communities that still preserve their language, traditions and famous afternoon tea. Today, it’s still possible to visit Welsh chapels, enjoy traditional bara brith and hear Welsh spoken in parts of Chubut Province.
Nothing but the best. Browse our handpicked, tried-and-tested luxury hotels.
This wild and remote stretch of coastline is one that rewards travellers. There are two main access points with Trelew in the north and Comodoro Rivadavia in the south. Both are around 2 to 3 hours from the centre of Patagonia Azul.
If you want the full wildlife experience then late September and early August are fabulous months to explore this stretch of coastline. In reality, however, that often doesn’t fit with other parts of Argentina. The good news is that in October and November are also stunning with wildflowers blooming and there is still huge amounts of wildlife in the area. Beyond November, the wildflowers vanish but the wildlife remains in good numbers until March.
