Set beneath the granite spires of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, El Chaltén is Patagonia at its most dramatic. Unlike many mountain destinations, the trails begin almost from the edge of the village, allowing you to step straight into one of South America’s finest hiking landscapes. Whether you are looking for a gentle walk to a turquoise lagoon or a full-day trek beneath towering peaks, there are routes to suit every ability.
The village itself has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, with independent cafés, craft breweries and small lodges that provide a comfortable base after a day outdoors. Beyond hiking, El Chaltén offers opportunities for rock climbing, horse riding, fly fishing and kayaking, while photographers are rewarded with ever-changing light across glaciers, forests and snow-capped summits.
It also pairs perfectly with neighbouring El Calafate, combining the immense ice of the Perito Moreno Glacier with Patagonia’s most celebrated mountain scenery. Spend a few days exploring the trails before continuing deeper into Argentine Patagonia or crossing into Chile for Torres del Paine. For active travellers, there are few places in the world where extraordinary wilderness is so accessible and rewarding.

The peaks around El Chaltén are among the world’s most challenging climbs. When Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone made the first ascent of Mount Fitz Roy in 1952, it was celebrated as one of the greatest mountaineering achievements of the century. Even today, fierce Patagonian winds and rapidly changing weather mean these granite spires remain a formidable test for the world’s best climbers.
El Chaltén takes its name from the indigenous Tehuelche word for “smoking mountain”. For centuries, the clouds that frequently shroud Mount Fitz Roy’s summit were mistaken for smoke rising from a volcano. It wasn’t until European explorers reached the region in the nineteenth century that they realised the mountain was not volcanic at all, but a towering granite peak carved by ice.
Nothing but the best. Browse our handpicked, tried-and-tested luxury lodges.
There is no airport at El Chaltén, although private helicopter transfers are available. However, most travellers will arrive by road from El Calafate, which is 135miles to the south of El Chaltén. A journey of around 3 hours, with some spectacular views along the way.
In the office, we will often disagree about the best time to be in Patagonia; whether it is spring or autumn is the question. November in El Chaltén sees the flowers come into bloom, and in March and April the trees turn a stunning shade of red. What we do know is that either of these periods is better than the traditional best time of midsummer when the wind can be strong and the visitor numbers high.
